Philip Morris moves in the market of electronic cigarettes

The Marlboro Man’s rugged image could soon disappear. Altria Group, the country’s No. 1 tobacco company and owner of the Marlboro manufacturer Philip Morris USA, on Tuesday became the latest major player to enter in the young, but potentially lucrative business electronic cigarette. The Richmond, Virginia-based Company unveiled its new Markten electronic cigarette brand on its annual day investor conference in New York. Altria said it will begin to spread Markten in August, through its subsidiary Nu Mark, who also sells CDs Verve chewing nicotine. Markten will initially be sold only in Indiana, however. Altria has not announced when or if it intends to hold the brand on a national level. “(E-cigarette) category is in its early stages and time will tell how it will evolve,” general manager Marty Barrington, Altria told … Read entire article »

Italian Tobacco Industry wrestling with electronic cigarettes

The Italian Union of tobacco operators last week appealed to the regional court of Lazio, in an attempt to block the sale of electronic cigarettes. The case is the latest in a series of measures taken by the tobacco industry, which believes that the spread of electronic cigarettes trade is being replaced with a hammer forged trade and smuggling. The Italian government has not yet fully regulated electronic cigarette phenomenon, and there are doubts about its potential impact on human health and the economy. “It’s unfair competition,” says Enzo Perrotta, president of the Union of the operators of tobacco in a press release. Perrotta said that e-cigarettes should be taxed in the same way as traditional, and that their distribution should be done selectively. “Electronic cigarettes way to consume nicotine, they just sell … Read entire article »

Minnesota Retailer Bets on Electronic Cigarettes

As electronic cigarettes fight for respect and recognition, one Minnesota retailer is hoping that the relatively new industry spells success for his store. Anoka resident Steven Ryan has so much hope that he is putting all his eggs in one basket. Last month, Ryan opened the eCigs Shop, and as the name implies, it not only specializes in electronic cigarettes, but that is the only product it sells, as reported by KSTP. According to the store’s website, Ryan smoked two packs a day for 23 years. He tried his first electronic cigarette in 2007, and although he describes that experience as a failure, he tried again three years later and has not smoked a cigarette since October 2010. Electronic cigarettes are tobacco-free devices that combine the use of battery-powered heat and a glycerin-based … Read entire article »

New Anoka Store Sells Only Electronic Cigarettes

Electronic cigarettes didn’t seem to catch on after their Twin Cities debut two years ago. But an Anoka man is betting they will now, thanks to improved technology and falling prices. Steven Ryan opened the eCigs Shop in Anoka last month. The store specializes in and only sells electronic cigarettes. Electronic cigarettes are tobacco-free. They don’t emit an offensive odor and according to Ryan cost about one-tenth the price of the real thing. Ryan first tried electronic cigarettes because after trying everything from acupuncture to the nicotine patch to stop smoking, he was still a two-packs-a-day smoker. Ryan said, “This is for those people who have tried everything and they are basically stuck on cigarettes.” Newer devices come in a variety of shapes and styles. Some look like cigarettes, some like cigars, some even resemble cell … Read entire article »

Electronic cigarettes becoming the choice of many long-term smokers

E-cigs typically consist of a cigarette-shaped device with a battery, a heating element and a cartridge containing propylene glycol and nicotine. Users puff on the mouthpiece to activate a circuit that heats the atomizer and produces a vapour. The users then inhale. But Penn State College of Medicine researchers suggest medical providers should continue to encourage more traditional smoking cessation methods. The researchers investigated this growing phenomenon through a survey of 104 long-term e-cigarette users. The study found that 78 percent of long-term users were no longer using tobacco and planned on using their e-cig instead, and only 8 percent were using the most widely marketed style of cigarette-shaped e-cigs. Most had learned that these do not deliver adequate nicotine and had used … Read entire article »

Electronic Cigarettes Still Pose Serious Health Risks

Touted as a safe substitute to highly addictive tobacco products, research has shown that electronic cigarettes are unsafe, and might soon be removed from the market. Last week, the University of California, Riverside announced that e-cigarettes are potentially harmful to users’ health, and urged regulators to consider removing e-cigarettes from the market until their safety is adequately evaluated. Instead of burning tobacco like normal cigarettes, e-cigarettes vaporize the nicotine, along with other compounds present in the cartridge, in the form of aerosol created by heating. While this eliminates the thousands of chemicals and toxicants created by tobacco combustion, there are still chemicals present in the aerosolized vapors emanating from e-cigarettes. Concerned that e-cigarettes, also called “electronic nicotine delivery systems,” might not be as safe as they appear, UCR researchers evaluated five of the most popular … Read entire article »

E-cigarette distributor settles with California, says it won’t target minors

Smoking Everywhere, the largest distributor of electronic cigarettes in the U.S., has agreed not to market its product to minors or claim they’re a safe alternative to smoking under a settlement with the California Attorney General. The settlement comes two months after the state reached a similar agreement with electronic cigarette maker Soterra. Earlier this year, the state sued Smoking Everywhere for targeting minors and what it said were “misleading and irresponsible” ads. The battery-operated devices simulate the look and feel of a regular cigarette. But instead of smoke, they emit a vapor from a replaceable plastic cartridge than contains several chemicals, including liquid nicotine. The state argued in its suit that selling flavored e-cigarettes — strawberry, chocolate or mint, for example — could appeal to … Read entire article »

AG Investigating E-Cigarette Maker From Weston

A Weston-based company called Smoking Everywhere wanted an executive who could go to battle against the FDA and U.S. Customs, which had teamed up to ban the import of e-cigarettes. But by hiring Ray Story in 2008, Smoking Everywhere may have got more than it bargained for. Story — who says he helped the company grab 60 percent of the market — has left the company, and now he’s taking the fight to his former Smoking Everywhere partners. The suit Story filed against the company has fueled an investigation by the Florida Attorney General’s Office, which may be considering criminal charges. Initially, Story clashed with one of the principals of Smoking Everywhere, Elicko Taieb, about business strategy. The company was one of two plaintiffs enmeshed in an expensive lawsuit against the FDA, … Read entire article »

New era for electronic cigarettes

If the terms “electronic cigarette” and “e-cig” are new to you, don’t worry, you’re not alone. It’s an alternative to smoking and a relatively new technology, but it is a simple one: a battery powered device that replicates the act of smoking. These devices are small and resemble an actual cigarette, only unlike typical nicotine inhalers that have surfaced over the years the e-cig actually produces a smoke-like vapor. An atomizer vaporizes nicotine infused e-liquid, which is triggered by a micro sensor every time you inhale from the e-cig, giving you lush plumes of white vapor. No lighters, matches or flame of any kind is required to enjoy an e-cig, since the vaporization is all micro-technology contained within the unit. However, to further simulate the sensation of smoking a real cigarette, … Read entire article »
