Awareness Of COPD Increasing

The number of Americans who report being aware of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, or COPD, increased by 4 percentage points between 2008 and 2010, but many people at risk are still unaware of the disease, according to mailed survey results released today by the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI), part of the National Institutes of Health. Sixty-nine percent of adults said they are aware of COPD. However, up to 30 percent of Americans reported that they were unaware of the condition. Awareness increased steadily among current and former smokers as well as nonsmokers. “COPD kills more than 120,000 adults each year. That’s one death every four minutes — more than breast cancer and diabetes combined. Yet people go undiagnosed and untreated because they don’t recognize the symptoms,” said James P. The Link Between Smoking and Coffee

If the smoker is a coffee drinker, you can be certain that a cigarette will be part of the process. A perfect example of this is found in the movie, “Walk, Don’t Run” starring Carey Grant and Samantha Eggar. Survey – Nicotine dependence

Approximately 15.4 percent of adults, or 154,000 individuals, use tobacco in Hawaii, according to a 2008 survey by the state Health Department. The greatest percentage of smokers are ages 25 to 34, according to the survey, with the 18-to-24 group not far behind. Of the adults who smoke, more than half tried to quit in the past year. Most do want to quit smoking but are easily discouraged, according to Beth Davidann, director of the Wellness & Lifestyle Medicine Center at Castle Medical Center, which offers individual counseling, treatment and group classes.
