The History of Cuban Cigars

Explorer Christopher Columbus is generally credited with the introduction of tobacco to Europe. Two of Columbus’s crewmen during his 1492 journey,Rodrigo de Jerez and Luis de Torres, are said to have encountered tobacco for the first time on the island of Hispaniola, when natives presented them with dry leaves that spread a peculiar fragrance. Tobacco was widely diffused among all of the islands of the Caribbean and therefore they again encountered it in Cuba where Columbus and his men had settled. His sailors reported that the Cuban Indians smoked a primitive form of cigar, with twisted, dried tobacco leaves rolled in other leaves such as palm or plantain. Truth in advertising on cigarette brands

QUESTION: Although I am proud to have quit smoking years ago, I have noticed a recent change in the way cigarette packs are labeled. The product names and package designs are different. What prompted these changes, and what was the thinking behind them? Answer: The changes you’ve noticed in cigarette packaging are the result of new Food and Drug Administration tobacco-industry regulations. The Family Smoking Prevention and Tobacco Control Act, signed into law in 2009, stipulates that tobacco companies may no longer use the terms “light,” “low” or “mild” to describe their products. This law applies to tobacco packaging and any tobacco-related advertising. As of June 22, tobacco manufacturers were prohibited from producing any more products carrying these descriptors and, since July 22, no company in the tobacco industry has been … Read entire article »

A Weston-based company called Smoking Everywhere wanted an executive who could go to battle against the FDA and U.S. Customs, which had teamed up to ban the import of e-cigarettes. But by hiring Ray Story in 2008, Smoking Everywhere may have got more than it bargained for. Story — who says he helped the company grab 60 percent of the market — has left the company, and now he’s taking the fight to his former Smoking Everywhere partners. The suit Story filed against the company has fueled an investigation by the Florida Attorney General’s Office, which may be considering criminal charges. Initially, Story clashed with one of the principals of Smoking Everywhere, Elicko Taieb, about business strategy. The company was one of two plaintiffs enmeshed in an expensive lawsuit against the FDA, … Read entire article »
