Marlboro, to provide a “smoke ceremony”
Smokers rejoice. There is a new, healthier way to smoke, all thanks to the innovators at Altria (formerly known as Philip Morris). Marlboro has just released Smoke Rites, a new line of health conscious products for modern people with active lifestyles. The concept was born more than two years of intensive research in the laboratories of Marlboro. The head researcher Dr. Dylan Pantzenfahr explains: “The treatment of lung cancer is one of the main priorities of Marlborough. And while we can not change the nature of the [tobacco], we can change the way people smoke.” Pantzenfahr refers to the portion. To date, there are no standard servings for consumption of cigarettes. “It’s a complicated issue,” says Pantzenfahr, “a man with a massive light can consume a lot more cigarettes portion than, … Read entire article »

Fake Marlboro Vendors Sued by Philip
Philip Morris International Inc. (PM) has filed a case in U.S. District Court against local retailers in Miami for selling fake Marlboro cigarettes. The New York-based cigarette company has tracked down 17 retailers who have been selling these cigarettes. Philip Morris has been fighting against retailers and importers who sell fake versions of its top branded cigarettes. In 2008 the tobacco giant had terminatedits relationship with the Poospatucks based on findings brought out by The Center for Public Integrity that indicted one of its distributors, Mauro Pennisi Inc. ofdistributing fake cigarettes to the citizens. In February, 2011 the company filed a lawsuit in California against seven Chinese online retailers, alleging that they sold counterfeit versions of Marlboro to U.S. customers. Philip Morris says Miami is one of the top three areas and a hotbed … Read entire article »

Philip Morris USA Sues Miami Retailers to Combat Counterfeit Cigarette Sales
Philip Morris USA (PM USA) filed a civil lawsuit on Friday against 17 retailers in the Miami area for selling counterfeit Marlboro cigarettes. This lawsuit is part of a multi-faceted campaign by PM USA aimed at combating the sale of counterfeit Marlboro(R) cigarettes in south Florida. “The sale of counterfeit cigarettes undermines Philip Morris USA’s brands, defrauds adult smokers who believe they are purchasing genuine Marlboro(R) product and harms the legitimate channels through which our products are distributed and sold,” said Jose Luis Murillo, vice president and associate general counsel, Altria Client Services speaking on behalf of PM USA. “Selling counterfeit cigarettes is illegal, and we will take appropriate action to protect our brands, adult consumers and retailers. Philip Morris USA will continue to combat illicit cigarette sales by monitoring the … Read entire article »

A Closer Look at… Lorillard, Philip Morris, and Reynolds American
By now, it’s probably safe to assume that everyone knows cigarettes are bad for you. But, given the intensely addictive nature of nicotine, it turns out that smoking is one bad habit that’s tough to legislate away. Many states and cities now ban smoking altogether in indoor spaces, and cigarette packs are always a popular target when lawmakers are looking to raise taxes. Nevertheless, the breakout price action of tobacco stocks suggests that these fundamental challenges simply aren’t enough to put a dent in consumers’ all-powerful craving for another cigarette. Let’s take a closer look at sector standouts Lorillard Inc. (LO - 108.99), Philip Morris International Inc. (PM - 68.12), and Reynolds American Inc. (RAI - 38.23), producer of Camel cigarettes , to see if this positive price action can continue. Lorillard (LO) North Carolina-based … Read entire article »

Philip Morris International Dividend Stock Analysis
Philip Morris International Inc. (PM), producer of Marlboro cigarettes through its subsidiaries, engages in the manufacture and sale of cigarettes and other tobacco products in markets outside of the United States. The company was spun off from Altria Group (MO) in 2008, in an effort to separate the international operations of the tobacco conglomerate from potential harmful litigation in the US. PMI has not raised distributions for over a decade, like other stocks I focus on. I do however like the fact that the dividend raising culture of Altria Group has been closely followed since the 2008 spin off. The company has managed to raise distributions every year since 2008. I like the economics of the tobacco business immensely. First, the company has a strong brand name for its quality products. A large portion … Read entire article »

Proxy Season Proposals: the Popular, the Panned & the Common Sense of Tobacco
Another uncommon shareholder proposal was filed last year by healthcare system Trinity Health, which asked cigarette company Philip Morris International, producer of Chesterfield cigarettes and Virginia cigarettes, to conduct a study about how the company markets its products to poor people. In its proposal, Trinity Health requested that Philip Morris “commission an independent study and issue a report on the affect of our company’s marketing on the purchasing practices of poor people and what might be done to mitigate the harm to innocent children. ” The company recommended a vote against the proposal, stating, “We believe that the right course for the company is to continue participating in the tobacco industry by marketing and selling its products responsibly, by advocating and supporting strong, effective and reasonable regulation of tobacco products, including … Read entire article »

Minn. court: Light cigarette case is class-action
MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — A lawsuit that alleges the maker of Marlboro Lights used deceptive trade practices and false advertising when it marketed its cigarettes as “light” can proceed in Minnesota as a class-action claim, the state Court of Appeals ruled Tuesday. The 45-page ruling by the three-judge panel sends the 2001 lawsuit against Philip Morris back to Hennepin County District Court. The class would include people who bought Marlboro Lights in Minnesota for their personal use from 1972 through November 2004. The number of people in the class and the amount of damages they would seek was not immediately available Tuesday. The plaintiffs are seeking refunds of money they spent on the cigarettes. In a statement, Philip Morris said it was considering its options for an appeal. The company said it believes class-action … Read entire article »

Is Secret Smoking Affecting your Relationships?
Most of the images we have of smoking are social, such as after a meal, or having fun with friends. In fact though, “secret smoking” is a new kind of part-time smoking which is increasingly common on the current scene. The public health community has succeeded so well in convincing us of the dangers of smoking that even the president of the United States has had to sneak around to smoke in the White House! What are the consequences of engaging in a hidden behavior like secret smoking that your spouse and children are so against? Why do families want smokers to stop smoking? Because they love them! They want them, in the words of the song by the Supremes to “Stop in the name of love”. So, not surprisingly, … Read entire article »

Opposing view on tobacco regulation: Concerned smokers can quit
For nearly a decade, Altria Group and Philip Morris USA, producer of Marlboro cigarettes actively supported federal regulation of tobacco products. Philip Morris USA agrees with the overwhelming medical and scientific consensus that cigarette smoking causes lung cancer, heart disease, emphysema and other serious diseases in smokers. OUR VIEW: Nation must do more to keep kids out of smoking pipeline We cannot ignore the health issues associated with tobacco use and its implications for consumers and society as a whole. At the same time, as Congress confirmed by passing legislation that gave the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) regulatory authority over tobacco products, society has decided to continue to permit the sale of these products to adults and to leave decisions about their use to those adults. Much of the recent Surgeon General’s … Read entire article »

Some of the larger cigarette makers have recently posted strong quarterly results, despite a myriad of negative influences on the industry. Canada freezes big anti-tobacco push, critics fume
Canada has frozen long-held plans to slap graphic new on packs of cigarettes, prompting critics to attack what they see as the tobacco industry’s excessive influence on the minority Conservative government. The federal health ministry spent six years devising the new campaign and agreeing on the details with the country’s 10 provinces, which administer the public healthcare system. Earlier this month, Ottawa told the provinces the plan was on hold. “Health Canada continues to examine the renewal of health warning messages on tobacco packaging but is not ready to move forward at this time,” a spokeswoman told Reuters on Tuesday. She also referred to recent law and order measures designed to cut the production and sale of contraband tobacco — a key demand of the industry. Since 2001, all cigarette packs — which cannot be displayed openly … Read entire article »
