FDA to treat e-cigs like other tobacco products

The Food and Drug Administration said Monday it plans to regulate smokeless electronic cigarettes as tobacco products and won’t try to regulate them under stricter rules for drug-delivery devices. The federal agency said in a letter to stakeholders Monday it intends to propose rule changes to treat e-cigarettes the same as traditional cigarettes and other tobacco products. The news is considered a victory for makers and distributors of the devices, which continue to gain popularity worldwide. E-cigarettes are plastic and metal devices that heat a liquid nicotine solution in a disposable cartridge, creating vapor the “smoker” inhales. A tiny light on the tip even glows like a real cigarette. FDA wants to get schooled in cigarette making, asks tobacco cos for learning tours

The Food and Drug Administration wants to get schooled in cigarette making. The federal agency’s 2-year-old Center for Tobacco Products is asking tobacco companies to invite it to tour farms and factories that grow or process tobacco. It says the visits are meant to help the agency better understand how each step in the process — from field to package — could influence the final product. The FDA wants to tour large and small cigarette factories, a smokeless tobacco plant, tobacco farms, a rolling-paper factory and a tobacco warehouse. The agency won the authority to regulate tobacco in 2009. Although the agency has the authority to visit most tobacco facilities, the tours are not official inspections. It said in its request that better understanding the industry “may be helpful.” “Some of the people they’ve hired … Read entire article »

Philip Morris International Dividend Stock Analysis

Philip Morris International Inc. (PM), producer of Marlboro cigarettes through its subsidiaries, engages in the manufacture and sale of cigarettes and other tobacco products in markets outside of the United States. The company was spun off from Altria Group (MO) in 2008, in an effort to separate the international operations of the tobacco conglomerate from potential harmful litigation in the US. PMI has not raised distributions for over a decade, like other stocks I focus on. I do however like the fact that the dividend raising culture of Altria Group has been closely followed since the 2008 spin off. The company has managed to raise distributions every year since 2008. I like the economics of the tobacco business immensely. First, the company has a strong brand name for its quality products. A large portion … Read entire article »

Bulgaria launches Bulgartabac privatisation

Bulgaria’s Privatisation Agency launched on April 26 2011 the sell-off procedure for the state’s 79.83 per cent holding in tobacco giant Bulgartabac, expecting to find a buyer for the group within four months. The company will be sold through a one-off competitive procedure, which could be joined by strategic and financial investors. Potential strategic investors will be required to have generated an annual revenue from sales of tobacco products of one billion euro in the past three financial years. They must also have the capacity to process 12 000 tons of tobacco and produce 35 billion cigarettes a year. “None of the Bulgarian companies meet the criteria. Philip Morris, Japan Tobacco International and South Korea’s KT&G, which has shown interest, comply with them, so does British American Tobacco, which however is not interested … Read entire article »

University should not butt-out smoking

Though health is always a concern for college students, a recent push to make UW-Whitewater a smoke-free campus is a little unreasonable and unrealistic. Last fall, students began informally meeting to collect information on making UW-Whitewater a smoke-free campus. Though these students efforts are a valiant effort to make UW-Whitewater a healthier place, having a smoke-free campus would not work and should not be implemented. According to ABC News, researchers from the Harvard School of Public Health determined approximately one-third of college students nationwide use tobacco products. Creating a smoke-free campus is not nearly as simple as telling students who smoke tobacco products they cannot smoke on campus.  There are various issues that must be taken into account. Historically, prohibition on any level has never truly worked. Take for example alcohol prohibition in the United … Read entire article »

Reasons to Buy Lorillard – At a Slightly Lower Price

As the stock market starts discounting the end of the Fed’s QE2 coming in June, along with possible spending cuts and austerity programs in Washington, investors should start rotating money from beloved momentum stocks such as Netflix (NFLX) or Open Table (OPEN) towards companies with stable operating business and good dividend yields. Lorillard (LO), the third largest U.S. tobacco company, is such a company, producer of Kent cigarettes. About one month ago, an independent report about menthol cigarettes by the Tobacco Products Scientific Advisory Committee concluded that “menthol flavor harms the public by luring more people to start smoking and making it harder to quit” but fell short of recommending an outright ban on menthol cigarettes to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA). That same day, shares of Lorillard (LO), which … Read entire article »

E-cigarettes dubbed a tobacco product by the government

On Monday, the Food and Drug Administration said there will be marketing, manufacturing, and safety restrictions on e-cigarettes, according to L.A. Times. The FDA will have to regulate e-cigarettes as tobacco products, even though they wanted to regulate them as drug devices. The government stepped in and demanded that e-cigarettes will be deemed as tobacco products. According to Wall Street Journal, the FDA said, “The government has decided not to seek further review of this decision, and the FDA will comply with the jurisdictional lines established by the court.” The e-cigarette runs on a battery and possesses a liquid suspension that contains nicotine. The user inhales from the cartridge letting off a water vapor. The idea is to give the user the sensation of smoking without actually inhaling smoke. This is why the … Read entire article »

FDA Will Regulate E-Cigarettes As Tobacco Products

The Food and Drug Administration said Monday it won’t appeal a federal court decision and will regulate electronic cigarettes as tobacco products. The FDA wanted to regulate electronic cigarettes as drug devices, just as nicotine gum and smoking cessation products are regulated. Electronic cigarettes are battery-powered tubes that turn nicotine-laced liquid into a vapor. However, a decision in January by the U.S. Court of Appeals for the D.C. Circuit stated the FDA instead should regulate electronic cigarettes as tobacco products, not as drug devices. Regulation as drug devices would have required e-cigarettes to go through a pre-market approval process. The FDA, in a statement, said “The government has decided not to seek further review of this decision, and FDA will comply with the jurisdictional lines established by (the circuit court decision.)” Monday was the … Read entire article »

Tobacco items pour through border pores

At least 85 brands of cigarettes and 30 other tobacco products are being smuggled into Bangladesh, a health ministry survey says. The report also suggests that eight percent cigarettes sell without tax stamps, robbing government of huge tax revenues. Similar is the case with bidis too. At least 12 brands of bidis also find their way to the country from India, illegally. The survey report, of which bdnews24.com has obtained a copy, is scheduled to be made public by the government on Sunday. Much to the dismay of campaigners against the use of tobacco, the back-door entry of such products is only boosting the number of tobacco users. Highest, 10 brands of cigarettes cross the border illegally from Myanmar, while cigarettes from Japan, Russia, Greece, the UAE, India, Korea, the USA, China, the … Read entire article »

Ontario’s new illegal cigarette laws not enough to curb smuggling: groups

Ontario’s proposed changes to laws surrounding illegal cigarettes are a step in the right direction, but the province needs to focus on manufacturers to really curb smuggling, anti-smoking groups said Thursday. The new legislation tabled Thursday proposes that people found carrying small quantities of illegal cigarettes pay fines between $100 and $500. Someone caught with less than 200 illegal smokes would have to pay a total of about $175 in fees and taxes. “Illegal tobacco is a complicated issue, it is an issue that is multi-ministerial, multi-jurisdictional,” said revenue minister Sophia Aggelonitis. “We’re working with all our partners, and its important for us to take this first step.” Michael Perley of the Ontario Campaign for Action on Tobacco said the fines are a step forward in deterring individuals who want to buy illegal … Read entire article »

Illegal Tobacco Sales Rising, Study Shows

Illegal tobacco sales to minors are on the rise in Clackamas County, according to study by the Oregon Addictions and Mental Health Division.Researchers say nearly one in four minors who participated in the study successfully purchased tobacco products illegally in Clackamas County. The study, released in February, shows that Clackamas County had a higher rate of sales to minors then the state average. “Tobacco is toxic, addictive, and unsafe for everyone but especially for kids because if they start, they can be hooked for decades to follow,” said Paul Lewis, Clackamas County health officer. “This study shows it is way too easy for kids to buy tobacco illegally in our county.”Researchers say the study evaluated tobacco sales at 50 businesses during random checks. Twenty-two percent of the businesses that were evaluated in Clackamas County sold … Read entire article »

Candy-Flavored Tobacco Products

CANDY-FLAVORED TOBACCO PRODUCTS “I have to admit my eyes rolled when I first read the news — which seems to be my general reaction whenever I hear about government proposals to police the things people do with and to their own bodies. But on second thought, those disposable tobacco pellets sure do look like Tic Tacs! And that berry-flavored cigar certainly looks cute wrapped in that pink, sparkly packaging! I’m not sure there’s any way to justify things like that.’’ — ROB ANDERSON THE AUTISM-VACCINE LINK MYTH “[Parents have] been fooled by anti-vaccination hucksters like Andrew Wakefield, who reportedly received a standing ovation at Brandeis. Wakefield’s claim that vaccines cause autism has been thoroughly disproved, and his original paper has been withdrawn as a fraud by the journal that published it. He … Read entire article »
