E-cigarettes dubbed a tobacco product by the government
On Monday, the Food and Drug Administration said there will be marketing, manufacturing, and safety restrictions on e-cigarettes, according to L.A. Times. The FDA will have to regulate e-cigarettes as tobacco products, even though they wanted to regulate them as drug devices. The government stepped in and demanded that e-cigarettes will be deemed as tobacco products. According to Wall Street Journal, the FDA said, “The government has decided not to seek further review of this decision, and the FDA will comply with the jurisdictional lines established by the court.” The e-cigarette runs on a battery and possesses a liquid suspension that contains nicotine. The user inhales from the cartridge letting off a water vapor. The idea is to give the user the sensation of smoking without actually inhaling smoke. This is why the … Read entire article »

Electronic cigarettes prompt concerns
With smoking banned in most public places, die-hard smokers are looking for new ways to get their nicotine fix. The answer for many has become electronic cigarettes– but lack of regulation has raised concerns over the contents. The FDA is leading the campaign for clamping down on e-cigarettes, saying the products are not tested, not regulated by the federal government — and even being marketed to teens. Despite the fears, sales are on the rise. One of the biggest appeals, and selling points — the return of smoking on the job. “I can smoke it anywhere and no one can say anything to me about it,” said one e-cigarette user, Maria Rogic, who used the fake smokes to kick the habit of real ones. Electronic cigarettes have no tobacco and run on rechargeable batteries. When Rogic … Read entire article »

Smokeless tobacco may be on its way out of Major League Baseball parks
Major League Baseball begins the 2011 season in two days, and if public heath officials have their way it will be the last season during which players will be able to chew and spit smokeless tobacco on the field. The leaders of 15 public health departments in cities with professional baseball teams sent a letter Monday to MLB Commissioner Bud Selig and Michael Weiner, executive director of the union representing major league players, urging them to forbid the use of smokeless tobacco products. Tobacco has been banned in baseball’s minor leagues since 1993. “The use of smokeless tobacco endangers the health of Major League ballplayers and sets a terrible example for the millions of young people who watch baseball at the ballparks and on TV,” the health chiefs wrote. The letter continues: Tobacco use … Read entire article »

E-cigarette company becomes Firebrand for Valley native
Mahoning County native Brian Gage was a longtime smoker when he discovered electronic cigarettes. Shortly after, he began opting for the electronic alternative to his two-pack-a-day smoking habit. Last year, Gage launched his own e-cigarette company, Firebrand Electronic Cigarettes. E-cigarettes are battery-operated nicotine vaporizers that are shaped like cigarettes. They emit vapor rather than smoke, and they don’t contain tar. “There is nicotine in it, and nicotine is not healthy,” Gage said. “But what you’re not getting is the 56 other chemicals found in regular cigarettes.” Gage said he’s had some marketing help from his friends in Los Angeles who tried the products and spread the hype by word of mouth. A graduate of Canfield High School and Ohio State University, Gage said he moved to California in August 1998, settling first in San Francisco … Read entire article »

E-cigarettes appear to be safer, but more research is needed
A newer and reportedly “safer” alternative to cigarettes has been on the market for the past few years. They are called electronic cigarettes or simply “e-cigarettes.” Some claim they are a safer alternative to conventional cigarettes, but there isn’t enough information about the product assuring consumers about the (long-term) effects. My brother, Seth, is one of these users of e-cigarettes. Conventional cigarettes are known to cause many health problems, and plenty of studies have confirmed that fact. Smoking cigarettes has taken its toll on Seth. When he wakes up in the morning, he has a ten minute coughing fit that resembles a deathly last breath. Every time he walks up a flight of stairs, I can hear him breathing. It’s an awful wheezing sound that has been a concern for many … Read entire article »

E-cigarette distributor settles with California, says it won’t target minors
Smoking Everywhere, the largest distributor of electronic cigarettes in the U.S., has agreed not to market its product to minors or claim they’re a safe alternative to smoking under a settlement with the California Attorney General. The settlement comes two months after the state reached a similar agreement with electronic cigarette maker Soterra. Earlier this year, the state sued Smoking Everywhere for targeting minors and what it said were “misleading and irresponsible” ads. The battery-operated devices simulate the look and feel of a regular cigarette. But instead of smoke, they emit a vapor from a replaceable plastic cartridge than contains several chemicals, including liquid nicotine. The state argued in its suit that selling flavored e-cigarettes — strawberry, chocolate or mint, for example — could appeal to … Read entire article »
