‘Light’ Cigarettes Still Pose Health Hazards
More than 400,000 people die every year because of tobacco-related illnesses, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Despite the well-known health hazards associated with smoking, people continue to do so. Cigarette companies began to market “light cigarettes” after research began to point to the serious health consequences of smoking. However, the term “light” may have deceived many consumers into thinking the product was less harmful to their health. Health officials say even supposedly “light” tobacco cigarettes pose a health hazard and have barred companies from claiming otherwise. “The public health history here is a tragedy because for decades millions of Americans used these products under some expectation that the products would be less risky,” says Food and Drug Administration head of tobacco products Lawrence Deyton. “In fact, many who … Read entire article »

For the first time in several years, cigarette sales in Maine increased, reports theBangor Daily News.As measured by the sale of the state’s tax stamps that are required on every pack sold within the state, sales have increased five percent since January, an unprecedented rise, according to Main Revenue Services. “This is the first time that anybody at[Maine] Revenue Services (MRS) can remember where we actually had an increase in our cigarette stamp sales, and it has been a five percent increase since the start of the calendar year and that is unheard of,” said Mike Allen, research director at MRS. Allen said that Maine cigarette tax stamps sales have decreased one or two percent every year, though for the fiscal year that ended June 30, sales were … Read entire article »

No more flavored cigarettes, but teens still smoke
You may have noticed that you can no longer buy clove cigarettes in the United States. That’s because the Family Smoking Prevention and Tobacco Control Act, which forces tobacco companies to call “light” cigarettes “golds” or “blues” instead, also forbids them to sell cigarettes that have a “characterizing flavor” other than tobacco or menthol. For example there are menthol cigarettes like: Kiss Menthol cigarettes or Esse Menthol cigarettes. The official aim, as I explained back in 2004, is to protect the youth of America from “candy-flavored cigarettes” that would otherwise lure them into a lifelong tobacco addiction. Which sounds perfectly persuasive to your average “think of the children” knee jerker, except that there is no reason to believe such cigarettes have ever played a significant role in … Read entire article »

Cigarette menthol content manipulated by tobacco marketers
Menthol cigarette brands have been rising in popularity with adolescents, and the highest use has been among younger, newer smokers. Scientists at Harvard School of Public Health (HSPH) explored tobacco industry manipulation of menthol levels in specific brands and found a deliberate strategy to recruit and addict young smokers by adjusting menthol to create a milder experience for the first time smoker. Menthol masks the harshness and irritation of cigarettes, allowing delivery of an effective dose of nicotine, the addictive chemical in cigarettes. These milder products were then marketed to the youngest potential consumers. An example of well known menthol brands are Doina Menthol brand or Lady Menthol cigarettes. The paper, “Tobacco Industry Control of Menthol in Cigarettes and Targeting of … Read entire article »

Goodbye, Marlboro Lights. Hello, Marlboro Gold Pack.
“Light” cigarettes are going up in smoke by the end of June, but their names and packaging are getting a colorful makeover. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration says cigarette packs no longer can feature names such as “light,” ”mild,” ”medium” or “low,” which many smokers wrongly think are less harmful than “full-flavor” cigarettes. Cigarette makers are replacing those words with colors such as gold, silver, blue and orange on brands that make up more than half of the smokes sold across the country. Anti-tobacco advocates say the colors are just as bad as the words, but tobacco companies argue they have a right to let smokers know which products are which. Companies insist the words tell smokers about the taste, feel and blend of a cigarette, not health risks. The cigarettes … Read entire article »
